Aeroplan is a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One and Bilt Rewards at a 1:1 ratio, or from Marriott Bonvoy at a 3:1 ratio, with a 5,000-points bonus for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points transferred - making it easier for you to earn and redeem those points for flights!

In this post, I’ll explain how you to redeem points with the Air Canada Aeroplan program.

Step-by-step guide on how to
redeem miles with Aeroplan

1. Go to Aeroplan and create an account. Click “Join Aeroplan”

2. Once finished creating an account, make sure to check the box where it says “Book with miles” and fill out the other information.

For this example, let’s say you want to book a one-way flight going from Los Angeles (LAX) to Frankfurt, Germany (FRA) in Business class.

4. Click “Select” on the lowest Reward column. Note that there are some fees if you’re about to do some changes or if you cancel your flight.

3. Click any flights (that works for your schedule) on the Business class column where it says “70K + CA $105”. What this means is that it will cost 70,000 points per person and you need to pay $105 Canadian dollars or around $80 USD.

Note: On the 3rd option under the business class flights, it says “mixed cabin”. Make sure to always check all of the flights because there’s a chance that some if the flights are in economy and not business class.

5. You’ll be presented with 4 different options for the redemption. Click the box that says 70,000 + CA $104, then hit continue at the bottom.

Quick note:
You know you’re getting a good deal booking a business class flight when you see that the points needed is around 60K to 90K point
and not 382K points.

6. Once done, it will take you to this window where you need to fill out the rest of the details and payment information.

PROS AND CONS OF THE AIR CANADA AEROPLAN

PROS

  • No fuel surcharges - No surcharges is great so you use the money for food and activities on your trip!

  • Stopovers - Aeroplan allows you to add a stopover to one-way award tickets and 2 stopovers to roundtrip award tickets for only 5k Aeroplan miles per stopover.

  • Points and Cash Award Flight Bookings - After you find an award flight, Aeroplan displays a review itinerary and provide you some options on how you want to book your flight. Ideally, you will want to select the third option as it provides the best value using points + cash:

  • Family Sharing - You and up to 7 family members can be part of a family sharing pool, which you can set up from your Aeroplan Dashboard. Once the pool has been created and your family members joined, all the Aeroplan miles earned amongst the family pool will add to 1 shared mileage balance.

  • Lap Infant Award Tickets - Many airline award programs charge around 10% of the cost of the award flight. When you’re flying a premium class especially, this can be a lot of miles or cash to add a lap infant to your reservation. However, Aeroplan only charges 2,500 Aeroplan miles or $25CAD to add a lap infant.

CONS

  • Partner Booking Fees -  Aeroplan charges a $39CAD booking fee per person to book partner award flights. Also, it’s important to note that Aeroplan will charge $30CAD to make an award booking by phone, even when the award wasn’t bookable online with the only exception being stopover itineraries.

  • Cancelation Fees - a ticket change on a standard award will cost you 100 CAD, while a ticket redeposit on a standard award will cost you 150 CAD.
